Sandra Edwards

Emerita professor, Centre for Behaviour and Evolution, Newcastle University.

Sandra Edwards graduated with a BA (Hons) in Natural Sciences at the University of Cambridge, and then completed a PhD on livestock management and welfare at the University of Reading.

She subsequently worked for more than 30 years in applied research for the UK Agricultural Development and Advisory Service, the Institute for Grassland and Animal Production, and the Scottish Agricultural College, where she had responsibility for a range of projects on cattle and pig housing and welfare, nutrition and management.

From her position as Head of the Animal Management and Health Department of SAC, she moved in 1998 to become Reader in Animal Science in the Department of Agriculture at the University of Aberdeen. In 2000, she was appointed to the Chair of Agriculture at the University of Newcastle, where her research interests focussed on the multidisciplinary interactions between nutrition, reproduction, behaviour and welfare in pigs and other farm livestock. In 2017 she retired to take the status of Emerita Professor.

She has been active in a number of national and international academic and industry committees, including Council member of the European Federation of Animal Science and President of the British Society of Animal Science. She has also been a member of the UK Farm Animal Welfare Council and of the Animal Health and Welfare Panel of the European Food Safety Authority.




Sandra Edwards se licenció con honores en Ciencias Naturales en la Universidad de Cambridge, y a continuación realizó un doctorado sobre gestión y bienestar del ganado en la Universidad de Reading.

Posteriormente, trabajó durante más de 30 años en investigación aplicada para el Servicio de Asesoramiento y Desarrollo Agrícola del Reino Unido, el Instituto de Pastos y Producción Animal y el Colegio Agrícola de Escocia, donde fue responsable de una serie de proyectos sobre alojamiento y bienestar, nutrición y gestión del ganado vacuno y porcino.

Desde su puesto de jefa del Departamento de Gestión y Sanidad Animal del SAC, se trasladó en 1998 para convertirse en profesora de Ciencia Animal en el Departamento de Agricultura de la Universidad de Aberdeen. En el año 2000, fue nombrada Cátedratica de Agricultura de la Universidad de Newcastle, donde sus líneas de investigación se centraron en las interacciones multidisciplinares entre la nutrición, la reproducción, el comportamiento y el bienestar de los cerdos y otros animales de producción. En 2017 se jubiló para asumir la condición de profesora emérita.

Ha participado activamente en varios comités académicos e industriales nacionales e internacionales, incluyendo ser miembro del Consejo de la Federación Europea de Ciencia Animal y presidenta de la Sociedad Británica de Ciencia Animal.

También ha sido miembro del Consejo de Bienestar de Animales de Producción del Reino Unido y del Panel de Salud y Bienestar Animal de la Autoridad Europea de Seguridad Alimentaria.
